This guide gives a step-by-step tutorial on updating the firmware of the Roku Streaming Stick and Roku-powered TV.
Steps to Update Roku Streaming Stick / Roku TV
If connected to the internet, all Roku devices can automatically check for and install the newest software every 24-36 hours. If the automatic update doesn’t occur, you can consider updating the software manually by going to its system settings. Follow the steps below to upgrade the Roku OS to the newer version.
- Go to Settings on the home screen.
Once the Roku is turned on, you will see several options on the left-side menu pane. Use the D-pad on the remote to navigate to Settings and hit the OK button to select it.
- Click the option System.
On the Settings screen, scroll down until you find the System option. Highlight the System option and press the OK button to select it.
- Tap Software Update.
Under the System settings, you will see a list of options. Locate and select the Software Update option.
- Select the option Check Now.
Next, you will be taken to a screen showing the current Roku OS software version and build number. Above this information, click Check Now to check for new updates manually.
- Choose Update Now.
If any new Roku OS is available, a pop-up menu will be shown on the TV screen. Choose the Update Now option to start the updation. Once done, your device will restart automatically after finishing the update.
Steps to Update Roku TV Using a USB Drive
Besides navigating the settings menu, you can also update the Roku TV using a USB flash drive. Visit tvupdate.roku.com, choose your TV Brand, complete the prompts, and download the update file on your PC. Copy the update file to your USB flash drive and make sure it is formatted in FAT32 or NTFS. Then, connect the USB drive to a Roku TV. Go to Settings → System → System update → I can’t connect.

Note the 12-digit code on the TV screen. Enter the 12-digit code, and you will get a 6-digit code. Go back to the TV screen and enter this 6-digit code using a remote. Now, the software update will start, and your TV restart once done.
